May crack sa wall mo? Don't panic. But don't ignore it either.

Not every crack means there's a major structural problem.

Why cracks happen

Some cracks appear because of perfectly normal things:

  • Normal movement of the building
  • Settlement
  • Changes in moisture and temperature

Know what kind of crack you're looking at

The important part is understanding what kind of crack you have. Ask:

  1. Where is it?
  2. How wide is it?
  3. Is it getting bigger?
  4. Does it only run through the plaster, or
  5. Does it continue into the structure?

Those details matter.

What to do

If you see cracks appearing in your house, huwag mo agad isipin na guguho na yung bahay. Don't immediately assume the house is about to collapse.

But don't just paint over it either. Have someone qualified inspect it and figure out what's actually happening.

Measuring how a crack moves over time

Sometimes, a crack is just a crack. But sometimes, your house is trying to tell you something.
